Exterior Waterproofing Has Its Difficulties

May 31, 2022

External waterproofing can be the best method to protect your home from leaks in the basement. It’s also the sole waterproofing of your home, which requires the most effort, particularly during excavation.

It’s not something that can finish over a weekend. There are many steps to be taken. It is why licensed professionals must take their work seriously.

Everyone would like an unspoiled basement. More rainfall means more flooding in the basement homes.

The Costs of Exterior Waterproofing

The moisture can damage any area of the house – wood or block structures, foundations, and bricks. Cost estimates for fixing water damage differ; however, it’s usually at least a thousand dollars to replace or repair floors, drywall, or any electrical item. The costs for home repairs increase when the damage to the water gets not addressed or when the homeowner has to deal with clean water rather than a sewer backup or contaminated water.

The basement is usually used as a space to live in for the entire family and a place to work or as a rental unit that earns income. The consequences of keeping the basement unprotected from water leaks are serious. It is essential to address any issues that could arise from the beginning.

The Steps Involved in Exterior Waterproofing Your Basement

Ottawa Plumbing Service provides solutions for all problems, including proximity to neighboring properties and the impact the massive excavations like this could have on the property’s beauty, including the trees and gardens.

What are the necessary steps for exterior waterproofing of your home?

  • Make sure that work areas get protected by covering them with tarps.
  • The excavation should be done to the footing or the foundation of the home’s base and then around the entire area of the house and then open up the wall and floors in preparation for the waterproofing process. Most often, there is the bulldozer and other equipment associated with this.
  • Clean the walls, fix fractures using grinding into a “v,” and then repair them with hydraulic cement. Apply an abrasive mix. The glue will expand when it cures, covering the cracks.
  • Apply foundation aqua block that forms an asphalt rubber membrane over the cracks repaired within the foundation.
  • Fiber mesh gets used to reinforce and then apply another coat of polyurethane and aqua block to provide additional protection.
  • Delta MS drain membrane (durable polyurethane and recyclable materials, another feature that keeps your basement dry) gets installed with delta clips. The top molding gets finished with screws.
  • Remove the previous weeping tile, and replace it with the brand new “Big O” weeper with filter. Connect it to the existing weeping tile pipe. It gets located beneath the floor of your basement.
  • Encase the weeper by filling it with 3/4 ” clear gravel (one foot of rock over the weeper) and then putting the filter over it to ensure that the stone gets separated from the soil. Suppose the gravel isn’t over the new perforated pipe/weeping tile, and the ground underneath is not present. In that case, the system will fail because dirt can block the pipe’s holes.
  • Fill in and compact the ground every 2 feet until entirely backfilled.
  • Install gravel finish, wash work areas, clear any debris causing access to the site, and re-plant the area around the house when required.
  • Important note: Before any digging begins, the gas and hydro companies, as well as Bell and Rogers, should be informed to ensure that employees are not excavating into lines or pipes.
  • Install window wells in new windows with drainage pipes if needed.
  • It is also possible to install an automatic sump pump.

Waterproofing the outside is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. The process could take a day to two weeks based on the job. If you make a mistake, it’s not just that water will be pouring into your basement; you’ll also have to clean everything up and do it again. No one wants to pay the additional cost and headaches that result from that.
