The Causes of Main Sewer Line Clogs and How to Fix Them

Oct 18, 2022

Suppose you’re struggling with slow drains or an entire backup, and you’ve been onto the internet to find out the cause. In that case, chances are you’ve encountered the phrase “Main sewer Line” at one point during your investigation.

What is the main sewer line, and what could cause your drainage issue?

Although it’s not the root of your issue, it could be the root of your problem.

What Is the Sewer Main Line?

You clean your hands, flush the toilet, and run the washing machine. What happens after that? What happens to the wastewater?

What is the main line of sewerage? Eventually, yes.

The home’s drainage system is composed of numerous components.

You can see components in kitchen and bathroom fixtures, pipes that link to institutions under your sink, your home’s location, and underground.

Consider your sewer system as an actual tree. Although every house is unique, there are usually the same components. The water drains to different branches, much like the branches of a tree. Each branch line might have a few additional spots where moisture can escape.

Every branch is linked and drains into the main line, much like the trunk of a tree. For example, the kitchen sink and washing machine are on one branch in most homes. Additionally, your shower and sink in the bathroom could be draining in their branch lines.

The main line then runs from your house and joins the city line that begins in the alley or street.

Could the Main Line Be Clogged?

In short, yes.

The pipes that run directly beneath the fixtures, to the main line and branches, as well as the city’s bars, can clog any line.

If debris and water flow through your system, it may become blocked. Food waste, toilet paper oil, soap scum, hair, and more can accumulate and obstruct your system.

Other factors can lead to a clog, like the roots of a tree or shrub. If these symptoms persist, you might also have a sewage system break or hole. The origins of trees and shrubs do not cause cracks or holes in your pipe; however, they draw attention to the water leaking through the holes.

An obstruction in the main line will likely damage your plumbing fixtures because every branch in your home connects. Suppose it only involves a couple of institutions, such as the bathroom sink and shower but not the kitchen sink. In that case, the issue is likely not on the main line but the branch line.

Contact a Licensed and Reliable Plumber

They are harder to find since they spread across a larger region than diamonds. It may be in the ground, close to your home, or along the sides of your home. If you don’t own one or can’t locate it, it’s time to get the plumber.

Call an authorized plumber if you’ve exhausted all options and you’re still stuck with problems. There are sewers in various sizes, and you can be more precise in determining the cause of your issue.

A plumber to call while you could sound like a waste of money. However, think about how much you’ll pay if you do more harm or injury to yourself.

What Occurs If a Clog Develops in the Public Sewer System?

Homeowners don’t take care of the city’s lines. Often, the only areas that fall under your purview are those inside your home, along with the line delineating your property’s edge from a roadway or lane. If you think the blockage is not within the home’s system but the city’s line, you can call them.

They’ll be there to look into it, saving you time and money. They might tell you that they’re on your side, and if that’s the case, then you’ll be able to take steps to have your issues resolved.

We’ve never heard of any city charges for going out to look into something and finding it’s the homeowners instead of the municipal. Sometimes, they’ll even clean some things if they’re in the backyard. But, they rarely anymore due to liability issues and the number of lawsuits filed by satisfied homeowners in the present.
