Ways to Prevent Water Heater Leaks
Leaks in water heaters are a given for most Ottawa homeowners, especially those with tank water heaters. In the same way as other appliances, water heaters wear out over time and need replacing. Based on the manufacturer and the use and maintenance, they can last up to eight years. Some more durable, maintained tanks can last between 8 and 12 years.
While there are some variables beyond your control, such as water type or manufacturing error and the quality of the material, there are steps you can follow to provide your water heater with the most extended and leak-free lifespan you can.
Stop leaks from water heaters before they occur.
As we’ve demonstrated above, there’s no way to stop the water heater from leaking. Leaks are more likely because the components and materials get worn out as it gets older. But you can take steps to be sure to catch minor problems before they escalate into more serious ones:
Clean and drain the tank: Water has minerals. When your tank is drained and fills up, mineral deposits will begin to build up, affecting the hot water quality and eroding the tank’s bottom. We recommend flushing and draining sediment out of the tank at least twice a year.
Examine your anode rod: The anode rod catches and absorbs the corrosive mineral sediment inside your water. The rod eventually will become swollen with residue and cannot eliminate any more minerals that are corrosive from the water supply. Your tank’s bottom will be cleaner if you examine the rod’s anode and replace it when it is damaged.
Make sure you check the fittings and pipes: Check that the lines are solid, sturdy, and suitable for fittings. You’ll be amazed by the way pipes loosen with time.
Examine the tank for corrosion, rust, or any other weak spots. Look for weak spots and deterioration. It could indicate an impending failure of the water heater.
